Domaining – The perfect home business

Domain investing aka domaining has many attractive benefits for home business entrepreneurs. The internet may have had a few hiccups in the past, but the steady growth and strong internet economy is drawing huge numbers of people to dive into the entrepreneurs waters.

For an entrepreneur, domaining could be considered a perfect home business for many reasons, but consider this; the internet is infinite in size and is composed of domains. So if the internet is infinite and is composed of domains, then domaining could be considered an infinite market or at the very least a market with infinite possibilities.

Domain investing is a very flexible home business model with many options and many variables the investor can control or manipulate. When investing in domains you can; let them sit and age, you can park them with minimalist ads or content, you can develop them with content, you can lease or rent them, you can use them in conjunction with others for redirecting focus and traffic, and various other options.

“You can develop long term investments with lump some returns or you can create ongoing monthly revenue or both.”

As a home business, domaining allows you to set it and forget it or take a more hands on approach and develop a complete robust website that everyone wants to visit or anything in-between. You can develop long term investments with lump some returns or you can create ongoing monthly revenue or both.

Getting started in domaining is also very inexpensive as you can register a domain name for around $20 per year or even less. If you are going the hands on route and want to do some developing, Host Gator has shared hosting starting at $3.96 per month as of the time of this writing.

So, is domaining the perfect home business? I suppose the answer is an opinion and unique for everyone, but with the low initial cost, flexibility, instant startup, high potential roi, and growing market, it would be hard not to argue that domaining is an excellent home business choice.

Manage the value of your investments

Domain investing has become a very popular investment alternative to traditional investing for several reasons, but the most important one in my opinion is the ability to manage the value of your investments.

The ability to manage the value of your investments is what drew me to domain investing in the first place, so I want to share with you a few very simple things you can do right now to help maintain or increase the value of your domain investments. I did mention these are simple things you can do, and most domain investors already know about them, yet few people implement them.

•    Setup a simple site if you have not already and create some content for your site. Setting up a simple site only takes a few minutes with the many great and free software packages to choose from. Creating a little bit of quality content is a bit more time consuming, but it is well worth the effort. Now, most domain investors have multiple properties, so creating loads of quality content for every property is just not feasible. Pick a couple investments and dedicate a couple hours a week to producing or obtaining (outsourcing) some quality and relevant content for your investments. Content draws traffic and links and links draw traffic and more links. Traffic is the major measuring stick for valuating domain investments.

•    Build a few quality links to your investments that have content on them. You don’t have to beat the bushes, call in old favors, and spend your life savings on high end pr8 backlinks, but I’m not talking about forum signature backlinks either. Look into a couple of the popular article directories and possibly even doing a couple guest posts on relevant sites. Your looking for backlinks from real sites with real traffic and relevant quality content surrounding your links. I know you are busy, but submitting a couple quality articles to some popular article directories won’t kill you. The sooner you do this the better off you will be. Time is always a factor and the more age your backlinks have, the better they look.

•    Create brand recognition for your investments. Each of your investments has multiple uses, but somewhere in the domain name is a golden egg waiting to be shined up and introduced to the public. Find the best use for your investments and build on it. This can be done with on-site content as well as off-site content. Getting the name/brand out in the public eyes in subject related discussions and articles will start the ball rolling. It is a bit more detailed than simple content creation, it is all about using your brand name or phrase in the relevant content. Don’t forget about the social craze we are in, use Facebook, Twitter, and the other popular sites to put up a presence.

•    Become an authority on the subject/market your investment pertains to. Knowing the material and others knowing that you know the material are not the same. Make your presence known on a few online communities relating to your investment and get involved in the conversations. Ask questions, leave comments, be helpful and answer other peoples questions. You might be surprised how active some of these sites can be and how quickly you can build a name for yourself or your investments.

As mentioned before, everyone is busy and does not have time to nurse every single domain investment, but everyone can find an extra hour or two per week to put into building that nest egg. Simply waiting for the market to decide the fate of your investments completely negates the best part of domain investing, you can influence the value of your investments.

Domaining Tips Part 2

As a domainer you have options as to how you will conduct your domaining business. Are you the type of person that is more interested in a hands off approach? Are you looking for domains that have good turnaround value already built in? Are you the type of domain investor that would rather buy, park, and sell? Yes. No.

Well, maybe you where thinking your domaining career would be more hands on. Are you the domainer that buys domains that have great development potential? Does your domaining future involve the developing of domains into revenue producing websites? Yes. No.

The domainer in me likes the hands off approach, but the developer in me likes the revenue potential of a developed website. As a domainer you have to decide what types of domain investments you want your portfolio to consist of and how much effort you want to put into increasing the value of your portfolio.

Are you a short term, mid term, long term, or combination investor? What are your current financial resources and needs? Yes, your finances are generally the most important and influential factor in how, when, and why you will invest in domains.

If your financial resources are limited and your financial needs are tight, then your situation is delicate and much care must be taken when making your investment decisions. Start small and understand that little or even no financial return is possible from your investment.

“Read. Read. And then read some more.”

In most cases a savvy domainer can purchase a domain, develop a website, and produce a positive revenue stream with less than $12 per month budget. This is where your knowledge comes in. Read. Read. And then read some more.

Why invest in domains?

Domain investing, no surprise of this post. As the title asks; why invest in domains? The short answer: Domain investing offers investors less risk and more opportunity for a greater roi.ROI graph

The long answer:

Traditional investing such as that with the stock market requires investors to place their trust in stocks that they have absolutely no control over. Just hand over your money and hope for the best. It really is not much different than investing in lottery tickets.

Domain investing or domaining allows investors to be creative with their investing dollars and even increase the value of their investments. Domain investing is often related to real estate investing in that you are investing in property, virtual property, but still property. Like real estate investing, domain investing allows investors to make changes to their properties increasing the resale value of them.

Another way domain investing is similar to real estate investing is having the ability to earn revenue from the property. In real estate this would be done by renting the property, all though not as common in domain investing, it is still possible. The more common approach to creating revenue from domain investing without selling is to monetize your properties using various methods.

  • Renting or selling ad space
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Products
  • Services

Unlike traditional investing, domain investing is relatively inexpensive to get started in as well as low maintenance cost with lower risk and higher potential roi.
